Little details everywhere
The garden is full of small experiences that appear along the way. Walk slowly, look out for the details, and find the places where plants, stones and water meet.
Stenmaglehaven lies near Nyrup, close to Sorø in Central Zealand, and is an ideal day-trip destination for families, gardening enthusiasts, groups and coach parties.
Central Zealand · A private dream gardenWe are Louise & Dennis. For more than a decade, we have shaped every corner of Stenmaglehaven with our own hands, and now we are opening the gate for you.
We never work from a drawing. Every path, every stone and every pool has come to life from an idea, a mood, an impulse in the moment. One thing leads to the next.
As you walk around, you experience the garden just as we live in it ourselves: ever changing, full of little cosy corners and seating spots where you can sit down and simply be.

It came as something of a surprise when we won the title. Thank you so much for the support; we are deeply grateful. The garden was especially noted for the way the ornamental garden and nature blend seamlessly into one.
The garden is fantastic, and Dennis has a real gift with stones, plants, hills, valleys and lakes.

Watch the programme on TV2 Øst →When Dennis bought the property in 1997, most of the land consisted of fields with paddocks, with only a small garden holding a few shrubs and trees. Dennis kept beef cattle until 2008, and it was only once the cows were gone that the garden really began to take shape.
In 2018, Louise came into the picture and has since contributed great enthusiasm and dedication for gardening. That very autumn the stream and the first new pond were created, and more beds followed. Today Louise looks after the cakes, the social media, the website and the contact with partners.
We never work from a drawing. Everything is created from free imagination, but one project often inspires the next. That is why we lay out something new every year, and the garden is constantly evolving.
Dennis dug out the garden's lakes himself, the first in 2001, the next in 2007, and the last together with the 60-metre stream in 2018. Altogether around 5,000 m² of water surface.
More than 1,000 tonnes of stone have been used, some weighing as much as 11 tonnes. Among them are split stones from a Zealand castle park, cleaved by soldiers around 300 years ago as a by-product of the castle's foundation.
"Sten" for the many stones, and "magle", old Danish for large. A fitting name for this very garden.
We love to create, rethink and reuse. When guests sit down on a bench and lose track of time, that is when we know why we do it.
Stenmaglehaven is not just one route or one viewpoint. It is a garden with many little places where you can pause, look around and take in the atmosphere.

Take a break along the way and let the garden unfold at its own pace. Here you will find benches, nooks and open spaces where a visit is welcome to last a little longer.

Stenmaglehaven changes from month to month. New beds, blossoms, fruit trees and the colours of the seasons mean that no two visits are ever quite the same.
In October we revealed an exciting piece of NEWS! From now on it is possible to buy handmade pots from Vietnam at Stenmaglehaven.
All the pots are imported from local factories in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, and every one is unique. In fact, I would venture to say it is hard to find two that are identical.
These pots are truly special and unique in their character. The production process is impressive, which makes each pot its own.
When volcanic/glazed pots are made, the pot is first shaped by hand, on a potter's wheel or in press moulds. They are then dried slowly until completely dry. Once the pots are thoroughly dry, they are fired for the first time at 900-1000 degrees. After this firing the pots are strong enough to be handled and to absorb the glaze evenly.
During the glaze firing the glaze begins to “boil”. As it fires, tiny gas bubbles are pushed up and burst small holes in the surface – and it is these that create the crater and bubble texture. Colours such as green, turquoise and brown come from different metal oxides – for example, copper is used for green/turquoise and iron for brown/gold.
Once the pots have been glazed, they are glaze-fired in large gas- or wood-fired kilns at around 1200-1250 degrees. This firing makes them highly resistant to weather and frost.
Small differences in temperature, position in the kiln or the thickness of the glaze make each pot unique.
Is it just us, or do these minimalist cement pots fit perfectly with the modern building style? The clean lines and simple shapes are a perfect match for the elegant look.
The pots are shaped from lightweight cement. After casting, the pots are dried and sanded smooth. They are then hand-painted in several layers with a splatter effect. This method gives a modern and durable finish.
The rustic, classic and timeless appearance of the terracotta pots suits many styles. The pots create an authentic look with their warm earth tones.
When the pots are made, the first step is to dig up the clay. Once the clay has been dug up, it is cleaned of stones and kneaded until supple. The pots are then shaped by hand or on a potter's wheel with moulds and smoothed to the right thickness and shape. Next the pots are dried slowly in the shade, so that the clay does not crack.
Once they are completely dry, they are fired in large kilns at high temperature, which makes the clay hard and durable and gives the characteristic warm terracotta colour.

The pots can be seen at Stenmaglehaven, where they stand in natural surroundings and can be viewed together with the garden's plants, stones and little nooks.
Contact usAt Stenmaglehaven the bees have their own peaceful area, where they live close to flowers, fruit trees and the garden's many green nooks. They are a natural part of the garden and help bring it to life from early spring to late summer.
On the grounds we have a small apiary, where the hives stand in tranquil surroundings. From here the bees fly out into the garden and gather nectar from whatever is in bloom right now.
The honey is produced here in the garden and so takes on the flavour of Stenmaglehaven's season, flowers and surroundings. When honey is in stock, it can be bought directly in the garden during your visit.
Throughout the season we host atmospheric events in the garden. Tickets are easy to buy online or at the entrance; we recommend securing your place in advance.

Our cakes span a wide range: mirror-glazed mousse cakes with tart berries, classic luxury slab cakes and creamy cheesecakes. The flavours change with the season, as many of the ingredients come straight from the garden: strawberries in summer, apples and berries in autumn. So there is always something new to taste, and two visits are rarely the same.
A good cake needs a tart element, from berries such as raspberry, or from lemon and passion fruit, balanced with gentle sweetness. Mirror-glazed and airy.
